The Secret of Efficient Meetings

Are you bored of sitting around in meetings that are needlessly long? Are you keen to increase efficiency and reduce wasted time in office pow-wows? Well, perhaps Fleeting Seating: The Slightly Uncomfortable Chair Collection is what you’ve been waiting for - a collection of specially designed chairs that should guarantee shorter, more efficient meetings…

Yes, we just received Fleeting Seating: The Slightly Uncomfortable Chair Collection – a 28 page, A4 booklet produced to showcase a self-initiated project by creative agency Sid Lee which has offices in Montreal and Amsterdam. The project was spearheaded by Louis-Thomas Pelletier, who, on becoming a creative director of Sid Lee’s Montreal office a few years ago, realised he was spending a lot of time in meetings. Too much time, in fact, spent sitting around in wonderfully ergonomic office chairs such as the Aeron made him realise the simple formula: for maximum efficiency of time spent in a meeting, remove the element of comfort from the seating.

“I remember when I was a kid,” Pelletier explains in the text within the brochure, “there was a rumour – I don’t know if it was true - that at McDonalds, the benches were made so that you wouldn’t spend too much time there.” It was from that thought the idea for the Slightly Uncomfortable Chair Collection (SUCC) came.

Pelletier teamed up with Gabrielle Saint-Pierre, also at Sid Lee to realise the collection which is set to show in Milan next year. Yes, the chairs are a serious prospect. “I can see corporations buying some for their conference rooms and boardrooms - to make a point, a reminder to their employees,” says Pelletier. “There is a potential market for it, a niche market - but I don’t see them being distributed through Ikea.”

I always find a good one to get a meeting moving along is by saying:
“why don’t you take a seat and we can talk about the first thing that pops up”……

We need these at my workplace. We have pre-meetings to discuss the type of biscuits we’ll need for meetings..

in the 70’s genuinely innovative brands like Rank Xerox and Woolworths (yes Woolworths - who were one of the first to have integrated computer stock control) used to hold meetings by the coffee machine or in the car park on a cold/wet/windy day for exactly the same reason. only cheaper.

When I was working at Gap while at Uni we used to have stand-up one minute meetings. Which lasted, literally, only a minute. Brill.
There are so many clients that I would love to have sitting on a talking head chair. Genius! Oh and the space invader. And the rockoco. Ok. Where do I order these?

Very clever! We need a range of these suitable for the living room to encourage people to get outside and watch less TV.
