As well as designing three new limited edition screenprints which are available from his website as of this morning, type designer and illustrator Seb Lester has also made a short film to help promote one of the prints in particular, called Stars (detail shown above)…

Stars – A new limited edition print from Seb Lester on Vimeo.

Lester’s Stars print makes use of a quote by famous Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. “The words had an immediate resonance with me,” explains Lester, “and I knew I had to do something with them. On close inspection you’ll see the lettering I developed is made up of hundreds of thousands of tiny stars.”

There are two different versions of Stars, both 594mm x 420mm (A2) and printed with metallic gold ink. One version is printed on Royal Blue Peregrina Classic 336 gsm stock in an edition of 100. The other is printed on Midnight Blue Plike, 330 gsm paper, at the same size and also in an edition of 100. Both versions are priced at £65.

“This old proverb certainly struck a chord with me,” says Lester of his So Much To Do print. “I found a delightful 19th century display face that I knew I wanted to use,” he continues. “I wish I could credit the designer of the typeface but I have no record of who that is. The letters’ warmth and character lend themselves well to this piece and look really sumptuous in metallic gold.”

So Much To Do is printed with metallic gold ink on Ruby Red Peregrina Classic, 336 gsm stock at 420mm X 420mm in an edition of 100. Priced at £50

There are actually two versions of the above poster, entitled Dreams. The smaller version (photo above, and detail below) is printed with a glossy metallic black ink on Bright White Plike stock, 330gsm. Edition of 100 at 594mm X 490mm £75

There’s also a larger version printed on Gunmetal H Range Mirri, 270gsm at 762mm x 610mm. Again in an edition of 100, £125. Detail shown below:

“With this Dreams print, I really wanted to push myself creatively and technically to produce something showy, intricate and hopefully beautiful,” says Lester. “The five lettering styles I developed are, as always, drawn from scratch. I was inspired by some of the most accomplished lettering in history but aimed to produce work that looks contemporary, stylish and relevant today. The larger, Gunmetal version looks especially impressive in the flesh but I’m very proud of both editions of Dreams. I think it’s one of my very best prints to date. The words are intended to be positive and inspiring. I happen to believe they can also be true if, on heeding them, you then wake up and work your arse off.”
