LSO: Master Conductor motion graphics

Category: Motion Graphics; Entrant: Design Bridge & Partners/Superunion

Superunion’s Master Conductor film marked Sir Simon Rattle’s last season at the London Symphony Orchestra. The project builds on the identity which launched in 2017, also created by the studio, which used motion data of the conductor as a pivotal part of the branding. Working with artist Ari Weinkle, Superunion once more used Rattle’s gestures as the basis for a moving image artwork, creating something “painterly in texture with a sculptural physicality”.

There’s a dramatic ending to it all as the piece “liquefies and drops to the floor” to symbolise Rattle’s last season at the LSO. According to Superunion, the project was technically challenging, particularly when it came to expressing his movements with computer-generated fluid simulations, and creating an aesthetic that felt more photoreal than CG. The film was the focus of LSO’s 22/23 New Season campaign, appearing in person at the Barbican, as stills in print and advertising, and on digital channels.
