The New York Times has been producing the New York Times for Kids for the past six years, releasing a new issue in the paper on the last Sunday of each month. First launched in 2017, and originally intended as a one-off broadsheet section, the issue was such a hit that it became a regular fixture.

Over the years it has built up quite a reputation for its use of design and illustration, as well as its ability to engage children in current affairs without patronising them. As Mag Labs art director Debra Bishop has said: “You want it to be cool, but you want it also to be very smart.”

The paper has been a recurring feature in the Creative Review Annual Awards as well. This year is no different, with 2022’s issues covering everything from diabetes and the different ways animals communicate, to an explainer on the worldwide microchip shortage and a guide to making prank poop cookies.
